Exams
Exams can be really encouraging steps in a child's learning of an instrument and they need to be positive experiences. There are several examining boards, each with their strengths. Saunders Music uses the Trinity Guildhall. Exam dates are published well in advance and are usually held at weekends, and the teacher deals with one local representative for the board, who is able to sort all the administration in a personal way. Another benefit with Trinity Guildhall is that results are posted within a few days.
Typically an exam contains:
The cost of the exam varies depending on the grade, from £42 for Initial (pre grade 1)
up to £101 for grade 8.
There is also the cost of the piano accompanist, usually from about £20.

- 3 pieces, 2 performed with a piano accompaniment, one solo
- Scales and arpeggios or exercise and study
- supporting tests: two from sight reading, oral, improvisation and musical knowledge.
